Monday August 21st, 2006

This morning the new Beckham fragrances have landed in store! This morning at 6am the pink pick-up truck collected our first stock of the two new his and hers fragrances for a 7am photocall at the Oxford Street store. Photographers and television news crews were there to capture the moment TV the world's best Victoria and David look-alikes delivering the stock into store.
This piece is currently running on Press Association and samples have been delivered to all the breakfast shows for 'on air testing' :

David and Victoria Beckham's perfume range is predicted to be a hit with shoppers as it prepares to go on sale. The his-and-her fragrances will be delivered to the Oxford Street branch of Superdrug by lookalikes of the celebrity couple. Andy Harmer and Camilla Shadbolt, who are among the UK's best known look-a-likes, will take the place of the high-profile pair. In keeping with the Beckhams' flamboyant style, the look-a-likes will arrive in a bright pink pick-up truck and walk up an astroturf carpet. The entrance to the Oxford Street store will be flanked by two super-sized perfume bottles. Demand is expected to be so high for the scents, both called 'Intimately', Superdrug customers in London, Birmingham and Glasgow may have to join waiting lists. When former England captain Beckham launched his 2005 perfume 'Instinct', 2,000 bottles were sold the morning it was launched. Police were called to the Oxford Street Superdrug to manage the crowds, the shop chain said. Both scents will be packaged in chunky glass cubes. The men's fragrance will be in a deep brown and copper bottle, the women's version will be pink. Each bottle of Intimately Beckham will cost G19.45 for a 30ml eau de toilette spray, with the 50ml costing G25.95.

Another big story today is the launch of the mole clinics in central London stores. The SAFE Brigade will be roaming the streets to ensure customers on the street know all about the instore activity. The Times covered the story this morning in its news pages:

"Mole clinics to open in high street pharmacies. A high street pharmacy chain is to open a string of mole clinics to help to tackle skin cancer. Three branches of Superdrug in Central London are to offer consultations to shoppers at the clinics using digital video equipment which can help to diagnose potential melanomas. Superdrug will offer shoppers a free ten-minute consultation at the three branches today before the clinics begin operating six days a week on a rotation basis. The opening of the clinics – at the shop's branches in Oxford Street, High Holborn and the Strand- comes amid a campaign a cut VAT on sunscreen products."

This morning ITV London Today ran the story advising viewers to head down to Superdrug.

Channel 5 news is heading down to the Strand store this morning to film a piece with the presenter getting his moles checked. The story has also been picked up by broadcasters as far a field as BBC Radio Scotland

The story currently running on the Press Association:

Pharmacy giant Superdrug unveiled proposals to operate mole clinics in its stores with a trial in London. The chain launched three clinics in the capital but said the scheme could be rolled out across the UK if it proves successful. High street shoppers will be offered a free 10-minute consultation on Monday at Superdrug branches on London's Oxford Street, High Holborn and The Strand. From Tuesday, the clinics will operate six days a week on a rotation basis, with consultations costing G45 for one mole and G15 for each additional mole examined. Superdrug has linked up with The Mole Clinic to provide the equipment and has set a target of examining 1,000 moles by the end of the year. The introduction of the clinics is part of the Superdrug and Institute of Cancer Research SAFE summer campaign. Campaigners want the Government to abolish VAT on sunscreen to help protect adults and children. The London mole clinics will open from 9am to 6pm for booked appointments. The branch at 213 Oxford Street will open on Fridays and Saturdays, at 232 High Holborn on Mondays and Tuesdays, and at 50 The Strand on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
