World’s No. 1 and No. 2 Coming to Hong Kong

Tuesday November 15th, 2005

Organisers proudly confirmed the participation of the World No. 1 and the World No. 2 to play in Hong Kong at the Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2006. Following the end of the WTA Championships in Los Angeles on Sunday, Lindsay Davenport finished the year World No 1 and Kim Clijsters finished No 2! For the tournament in Hong Kong, these positions cannot change.
President of the Hong Kong Tennis Patrons' Association, Mr. Ian Wade enthused "It's fantastic news both for the tournament, and for Hong Kong as an events capital. Indeed it's great news for all sports fans. Not often can a city host a global sport, which features both the World No. 1 and No. 2 Player! The fascinating thing is that not only do we have these two stars but we also have Venus and Serena Williams, one the Wimbledon Champion and the other the Australian Open Champion. That's pretty good!"

Organisers announced last month these first four stars to play in the Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2006 and will release the other four names later this month. The popular tournament regularly attracts some of the biggest names in world tennis. Graf, Hingis, Seles, Capriati, Navratilova, Sharapova have all competed in the Champions Challenge.

Tournament Director, Mr. Terry Catton commented, "Hong Kong has a reputation amongst tennis players for staging top class professional events. They enjoy the competition, and they love the city. The Tennis Patrons Association will continue to bring the best players to play in Hong Kong, both for the benefit of the city and for its fans."

The Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2006 takes place from January 4th – 7th at the Victoria Park, Hong Kong. It features eight players and is played over four days in a Singles and Doubles competition.
